ObjectiveTo study the occurrence and severity of thrombocytopenia in children with malaria.MethodsIt was a retrospective study, done at Fr Muller Medical College Hospital Mangalore, in Karnataka, India. Data regarding all positive cases of malaria < 15 years admitted in the hospital between January 2010 to June 2011 were obtained. Patients were further assessed for thrombocytopenia and its severity. Data were analysed by Chi square test using SPSS version 13.0.ResultsA total of 159 cases were included in the study with a mean age of presentation of 9 years. Plasmodium vivax was identified in 106 (66%) patients while Plasmodium falciparum in 26 (16%) and mixed infection in 27 (18%) patients. Thrombocytopenia was observed in 113 (71%) cases, of which 35 (31%) cases had mild, 49 (43%) cases moderate and 29 (26%) cases had severe thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia was equally found in vivax and falciparum infection with no significant difference in severity between vivax and falciparum species.ConclusionsThrombocytopenia is frequently seen in malaria and it is not dependent on type of malaria. In any acute febrile illness, thrombocytopenia should alert one to the possibility of malaria. 相似文献

Oligodontia is the congenital absence of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Oligodontia of permanent dentition is a rare occurrence. Preservation of the remaining deciduous dentition in such situations is important for both functional and esthetic rehabilitation of the patient. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a 16‐year‐old male with oligodontia of permanent teeth treated by an interdisciplinary team of prosthodontist, pedodontist, and orthodontist. The remaining deciduous dentition was endodontically treated. Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) of the deciduous dentition was assessed. A full‐mouth single piece porcelain‐fused‐to‐metal telescopic prosthesis for the maxillary and mandibular arches was planned with a minimal increase in OVD. The telescopic prosthesis provided excellent retention, stability, esthetics, and stress equalization on the remaining deciduous dentition. Maintenance of oral hygiene procedures was simplified for the adolescent with the telescopic prosthesis. Preservation of remaining deciduous dentition and fabrication of a telescopic prosthesis in this patient provided an effective esthetic and functional rehabilitation. 相似文献

Background
With the trend of shortening the treatment time and reducing patient discomfort/inconveniences immediate loading of implants has emerged as an alternative approach for replacing missing natural teeth. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of immediate implant loading protocol over conventional implant loading protocol in partially edentulous mandible. Methods
Twenty patients were selected from out patients department who needed the replacement of one of the missing mandibular first molar. They were divided into two groups. In Group A patients implants were loaded with immediate implant loading protocol, whereas in Group B they were loaded with conventional loading protocol. Periimplant bone loss and soft tissue health were measured and compared using OPG and IOPA radiographs 06 and 12 months after implant placement. Results
One implant failed in immediate loading group (Group A), whereas all implants survived in conventional loading group (Group B). The average periimplant bone loss after 6 months and 1 year for Group A were 0.69 mm and 1.09 mm respectively, whereas it was 0.74 mm and 1.13 mm respectively for Group B. The difference in the bone loss between Group A and B was not statistically significant. Conclusion
Immediate implant loading protocol has a highly acceptable clinical success rate in partially edentulous lower jaw although implant survival rate is slightly inferior to conventional loading protocol. 相似文献4.

This clinical report describes the role of a prosthodontist in rehabilitating a patient with congenital aural atresia. The external auditory canal and structure in the middle ear fail to develop completely in cases of congenital aural atresia. Canalization procedure to establish the communication between the external ear and middle ear, and maintaining the patency of the created canal plays an important role in the success of treatment in selected patients. Post Operative external auditory canal restenosis is the most common complication after congenital aural atresia surgery. The prosthodontist has an important role in assisting ENT surgeons in canalization procedure and also maintaining the patency of the canal during healing phase. 相似文献
