Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver with spontaneous rupture: a case report

We report the case of an 8-year-old child, presenting a rhabdoid tumor of the liver with spontaneous rupture, revealed by an intra-abdominal bleeding with rapidly fatal course. This clinical and pathological report raises the problem of the differential diagnosis of primary malignant hepatic tumors of the child with no alpha-foetoprotein increase.     

Abdominoplasty: towards a two procedures surgery? Retrospective study of postoperative complications about 100 cases

Abdominoplasty has become in France a frequent, appearing to be technically easy but nevertheless source of potentially serious complications clearly deteriorating the aesthetic results and the satisfaction rate of the patients. By studying the results of a hundred abdominoplasties performed between 2001 and 2004, we could count the incidence of the various complications by seeking their possible factors of risk (tobacco or ponderal overload). In spite of the use of a lymphatic preserving technique, the percentage of séroma reaches 12%. The high complications rate or the number of insufficient results explains a rate of surgical reoperation of 31%. Abdominoplasty passed from the statute of repairing surgery to that of aesthetic surgery. The level standard in terms of result became equivalent to the other purely aesthetic interventions. Obtaining an optimal result thus requires often two operational stages, data element that it henceforth seems essential to us to provide to the patients.     

Persons with and without Down syndrome use similar strategies when using visual instructions for bimanual drumming

Background Previous research suggested that persons with Down syndrome (DS) used a different strategy to drum than typical adults. Methods The present study examined continuous bimanual drumming strategies in response to different instructions in 10 persons with DS, 10 mental age‐matched and 10 chronological age‐matched groups. The drumming task required participants to hit two drums with the drumsticks at the same time following verbal (e.g. ‘up’ and ‘down’), visual (e.g. video of both drumsticks moving up and down together) or auditory (e.g. sound of both drums being hit, then cymbal being hit) instructions for 10 s. Sensors placed on the wrists of each participant and the end of each drumstick provided data that allowed the assessment of individual drumming strategies. Results In general, when persons with DS were following the visual instructions their drumming movements were shorter, straighter and less variable as compared with their movements in the auditory and verbal conditions. Conclusions Whether movement paths were straight or curved, the strategy was to move the drumstick and wrist together as one unit.
