Resorption and calcification of chemically modified collagen/hyaluronan hybrid membranes

The objectives of this study were to characterize collagen/hyaluronan hybrid membrane before and after different chemical crosslinking, as well as to investigate the impact of the treatment method on resorption and calcification processes by in vivo tests. The kinetics study of resorption of collagen/hyaluronan membranes showed that after 28 days the membranes were completely resorbed. The modification of the membranes with glutaraldehyde comparing to the similar modification of pericardial tissue conducts higher calcification. Treatment with hexamethylene diisocyanate together with poly(oxyethylene) improved mechanical properties but the resorption process was similar. Additional treatments with diphenylphosphorylazide and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylamino-propyl) carbodiimide (EDAC) resulted in prolongation of the resorption time. Calcification was suppressed in case of treatment with EDAC.     

Fimbriae as virulence factors of uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli

Tolerance of interferon-alpha therapy in children with chronic hepatitis B

OBJECTIVE: To assess the side-effects of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy in children with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: This prospective study was performed on one hundred children by interviewing the patients and their parents; clinical examinations and laboratory investigations were performed during and after therapy. RESULTS: The most frequent side-effects of IFN-alpha therapy were fever, flu-like symptoms, and headaches. Lowering of the mean haemoglobin level, leukocyte and platelet count was significant, but transient during INF-alpha treatment. No increase in autoantibody titres or significant alterations in thyroid function was observed. Twelve months after treatment, hepatitis Be antigen (HBeAg) elimination and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization was achieved in 46% of the children; HBeAg and hepatatis B surface antigen (HBsAg) elimination, together with ALT normalization, was achieved in 14% of the cases. CONCLUSION: The side-effects of the IFN-alpha therapy in children such as fever, flu-like symptoms and bone marrow suppression are common, but transient and mild.     

An evaluation of the occupational health risks to workers in a hazardous waste incinerator

A study was conducted to evaluate the health impact of airborne pollutants on incinerator workers at IZAYDAS Incinerator, Turkey. Ambient air samples were taken from two sampling points in the incinerator area and analyzed for particulate matter, heavy metals, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) and dioxins. The places where the maximum exposure was expected to occur were selected in determining the sampling points. The first point was placed in the front area of the rotary kiln, between the areas of barrel feeding, aqueous and liquid waste storage and solid waste feeding, and the second one was near the fly ash transfer line from the ash silo. Results were evaluated based on the regulations related to occupational health. Benzene, dibromochloropropane (DBCP) and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) concentrations in the ambient air of the plant were measured at levels higher than the occupational exposure limits. Dioxin concentrations were measured as 0.050 and 0.075 pg TEQ.m(-3), corresponding to a daily intake between 0.007 and 0.01 pg TEQ. kg body weight(-1).day (-1). An assessment of dioxin congener and homologue profiles suggested that gaseous fractions of dioxin congeners are higher in front of the rotary kiln, while most of them are in particle-bound phases near the ash conveyor. Finally, the necessity of further studies including occupational health and medical surveillance assessments on the health effects of the pollutants for the workers and the general population in such an industrialized area was emphasized.     

Small bowel obstruction at a Filshie clip applicator port site

Laparoscopic Filshie clip sterilisation remains a common method of permanent female contraception. Worldwide, approximately 190 million couples use tubal occlusion (United Nations world population monitoring. United Nations, 2002). Trocar site incisional hernia has been reported as a complication of laparoscopic surgery where a 10-mm port was employed (Tonouchi et al. Arch Surg 139(11):1248–1256, 2004). It is common practice to repair port sites of 10 mm or more to prevent herniation. Port sites of 5 mm are not routinely repaired by most surgeons because it is thought that such iatrogenic fascial defects are not large enough to predispose to hernia (Reardon et al. J Laparoendosc Adv Surg Tech A 9(6):523–525, 1999). We report a rare case of early Filshie clip applicator port site intestinal obstruction following laparoscopic sterilisation. The mechanism of hernia formation and a preventive strategy are discussed.     

Rheologic investigation of electrode gels

Nine electrode gels have been investigated 6 of them are used in hospital pharmacies of this country. The results were compared to properties of two gels from abroad, the recommended electrode gel has been developed on this basis. Character of formed gel structure has been studied by flow curves and structural forces have been numerically characterized by determining the parameters of the function made linear. By determination of electric conductivity the proposed Carbopol gel has been found suitable not only to supersonic tests but also to ECG and may be to EEG.
