Community financing of drugs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

'Health for all by the year 2000' is unlikely to be achieved in a number of Third World countries, including those in Sub-Saharan Africa, if reliance is placed solely on the public health budget. This article looks at a range of alternative and additional sources of revenue and, in particular, at the scope for community financing of drugs. Developments in the region are reviewed for their insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each financing scheme; and, as a guide to shaping policies that make an appropriate choice of method of health care financing.

Report of the fourth meeting on ‘Influenza vaccines that induce broad spectrum and long-lasting immune responses’, World Health Organization and Wellcome Trust,London, United Kingdom, 9–10 November 2009

Current influenza vaccines are limited by the need for annual immunisation, frequent antigenic updating to match the evolution of circulating influenza virus strains, and reduced efficacy in elderly persons. On 9–10 November 2009, the Initiative for Vaccine Research of the World Health Organization convened jointly with the Wellcome Trust in London, United Kingdom, the fourth meeting on ‘Influenza vaccines that induce broad spectrum and long-lasting immune responses’. Presentations were made by representatives from industry, academia, governmental and non-governmental organisations. The objectives of the meeting were to update the progress of research in the field of influenza vaccine strategies able to generate cross protection against divergent influenza virus strains. Improvements in existing strategies including live attenuated influenza vaccines and adjuvantation of inactivated vaccines were summarised. Developments in novel antigen production methods, new routes of vaccine delivery and administration, and vaccine approaches based on conserved virus antigens were explored. In addition, correlates of immune protection and regulatory issues for the evaluation and approval of future novel vaccine strategies were discussed.

基于GIS的全国高水碘分布特征及与水系的关系研究

目的掌握全国高水碘地区分布现状和特征,利用地理信息系统(GIS)技术探索高水碘与黄河的关系,为进一步探讨黄泛平原高水碘的形成原因提供依据。方法以2004～2005年全国调查中9省市(安徽、北京、河北、河南、江苏、内蒙古、山东、山西和天津)各乡镇的水碘中位数为依据,采用地理信息系统(GIS)插值生成高水碘分布图,并计算高水碘乡镇到古黄河河道的距离;利用Spearman方法分析距离与水碘的关系。结果 9省市共有735个高水碘乡镇,除山西和内蒙古的高水碘地区独立存在外,其他7省市的高水碘地区主要分布在黄泛平原,沿着黄河及古黄河分布;高水碘乡镇水碘中位数与到古黄河河道的距离成负相关(r_s=-0.125,P0.05),按距离的四分位数将高碘乡镇进行分组,距离最近的乡镇组水碘中位数最高,为276.90μg/L,不同距离组的水碘值差异有统计学意义(χ~2=9.507,P0.05)。结论全国高水碘地区主要集中于黄泛平原,且沿着黄河及古黄河分布,高水碘的形成与黄河有一定的关系。

Properties and biological effect of dust of various artificial mineral fibers

Developments and use of man-made mineral fibres are important for the progress in some technical fields. In the last years the number of man-made mineral fibres increased extraordinarily. For the medical evaluation it is necessary to determine the physico-chemical characteristics of the man-made mineral fibre dust and its biological effects in animal experiments. The results of the investigations are described.
