| Abstract: | The effects of the three types of long-acting contraceptive implants on menstrual blood loss (MBL) were investigated. The implants included Norplant and domestic No. I and No. II implants. 89 healthy women, aged 18-40 years, and sexually active were allocated to 3 groups. Findings showed that 43.3 +or- 6.9 ml, 48.9 +or- 4.3 ml, and 43.7 +or- 5.5 ml were the MBL levels of the 3 groups, respectively, prior to implant use. MBL decreases were statistically significant at 12 months in all 3 groups (P 0.05) in comparison to pre-implementation levels. Moreover, an increased hemoglobin concentration was found. Consequently, decreased MBL and increased hemoglobin concentration would result after the insertion of a long-acting contraceptive implant. |
