In 2017 traffic accidents in Germany were the cause of more than 60,000 severe injuries and more than 3000 road deaths. If victims are trapped in the vehicle, the rate of severe injuries is high. In addition to alerting specialized emergency vehicles for technical rescue, transport by emergency helicopter services should also be considered at an early stage. The close collaboration of various available services is an essential part of the rescue. This includes knowledge of the various tactical options and the use of consistent terminology. Given the limited access and space available in the setting of a motor vehicle injury with a trapped patient, rescue requires a flexible approach to meet treatment standards of severely injured patients. The limited time available in these emergency situations emphasizes the importance of a coordinated technical rescue. The developing technological design of vehicles and alternative power systems present the emergency medical services with continually evolving challenges.
