Hearing thresholds and wave amplitudes measured using auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to brief sounds are the predominantly used clinical measures to objectively assess auditory function. However, frequency-following responses (FFRs) to tonal carriers and to the modulation envelope (envelope-following responses or EFRs) to longer and spectro-temporally modulated stimuli are rapidly gaining prominence as a measure of complex sound processing in the brainstem and midbrain. In spite of numerous studies reporting changes in hearing thresholds, ABR wave amplitudes, and the FFRs and EFRs under neurodegenerative conditions, including aging, the relationships between these metrics are not clearly understood. In this study, the relationships between ABR thresholds, ABR wave amplitudes, and EFRs are explored in a rodent model of aging. ABRs to broadband click stimuli and EFRs to sinusoidally amplitude-modulated noise carriers were measured in young (3–6 months) and aged (22–25 months) Fischer-344 rats. ABR thresholds and amplitudes of the different waves as well as phase-locking amplitudes of EFRs were calculated. Age-related differences were observed in all these measures, primarily as increases in ABR thresholds and decreases in ABR wave amplitudes and EFR phase-locking capacity. There were no observed correlations between the ABR thresholds and the ABR wave amplitudes. Significant correlations between the EFR amplitudes and ABR wave amplitudes were observed across a range of modulation frequencies in the young. However, no such significant correlations were found in the aged. The aged click ABR amplitudes were found to be lower than would be predicted using a linear regression model of the young, suggesting altered gain mechanisms in the relationship between ABRs and FFRs with age. These results suggest that ABR thresholds, ABR wave amplitudes, and EFRs measure complementary aspects of overlapping neurophysiological processes and the relationships between these measurements changes asymmetrically with age. Hence, measuring all three metrics provides a more complete assessment of auditory function, especially under pathological conditions like aging.  相似文献

PurposeThe study is an audit of reporting dose and volume specifications as per the ICRU 58 for MUPIT-based interstitial brachytherapy in gynecological cancers. Correlation between total reference air kerma (TRAK) and isodose surface was also evaluated to understand the intensity of treatment in interstitial brachytherapy.Methods and MaterialsForty-two patients underwent HDR MUPIT-based interstitial brachytherapy 20 Gy in five fractions after EBRT during 2017–2019. Treated volume, high and low-dose regions, mean central dose, Dose Homogeneity Index (DHI), organ at risk doses, and TRAK values were computed.ResultsHigh-dose regions V150 mean was 12.4 cc and V200 was 4.58 cc; and low-dose region was 75.92 cc. The mean treated volume was 59.8 cc. The mean central dose was 3.7 Gy. DHI was 79%. The mean D2cm3 bladder and rectum were 2.9 Gy and 2.8 Gy. The mean TRAK was 0.16 cGy per fraction per hour at 1 m. TRAK values showed significant correlation with various isodose volumes (TRAK and V100: r = 0.943 p < 0.0005; and TRAK and V50: r = 0.953; p < 0.0005). A positive correlation was observed between TRAK and the number of needles (r = 0.746; p < 0.0005). At a median followup of 16 months, 4 of 42 patients (9.5%) had local recurrences.ConclusionsOur study shows compliance with ICRU 58 recommendations along with certain deviations. Local recurrence rate is acceptable. TRAK shows correlation with surface isodose in MUPIT-based brachytherapy and should to be evaluated in future studies.  相似文献

Listening conditions in the real world involve segregating the stimuli of interest from competing auditory stimuli that differ in their sound level and spectral content. It is in these conditions of complex spectro-temporal processing that listeners with age-related hearing loss experience the most difficulties. Envelope following responses (EFRs) provide objective neurophysiological measures of auditory processing. EFRs were obtained to two simultaneous sinusoidally amplitude modulated (sAM) tones from young and aged Fischer-344 rats. One was held at a fixed suprathreshold sound level (sAM1FL) while the second varied in sound level (sAM2VL) and carrier frequency. EFR amplitudes to sAM1FL in the young decreased with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and this reduction was more pronounced when the sAM2VL carrier frequency was spectrally separated from sAM1FL. Aged animals showed similar trends, while having decreased overall response amplitudes compared to the young. These results were replicated using an established computational model of the auditory nerve. The trends observed in the EFRs were shown to be due to the contributions of the low-frequency tails of high-frequency neurons, rather than neurons tuned to the sAM1FL carrier frequency. Modeling changes in threshold and neural loss reproduced some of the changes seen with age, but accuracy improved when combined with an additional decrease representing synaptic loss of auditory nerve neurons. Sound segregation in this case derives primarily from peripheral processing, regardless of age. Contributions by more central neural mechanisms are likely to occur only at low SNRs.  相似文献

DDE and the o,p′ and p,p′ isomers of DDT were assayed in 94 human biopsy fat samples from hospitals in Delhi by gas chromatography. DDT was present in all except 2 samples at concentrations from 0.17 to 176.5 mg per kg of body fat. The average total DDT content was 21.8±2.9 mg/kg, of which 45.9% was DDE. The average value reported in a similar study in 1965 (24.3 mg/kg, of which DDE constituted 39.7%) was not significantly different from the present value, indicating that the DDT storage status has not since undergone any significant change.  相似文献

We studied the effects of bretylium tosylate and lidocaine on ventricular fibrillation in the isolated, perfused rabbit heart induced by perfusion with potassium-deficient solutions and by premature stimuli. The purpose of the study was to determine if the reported antifibrillatory effects of the drugs could be reproduced in the absence of an intact sympathetic nervous system. Lidocaine in the concentration of 5 mug/ml. prevented ventricular fibrillation induced by both methods while bretylium, in concentrations of 25 to 50 mug/ml. prevented neither type of filbrillation. These results indicate that the antifibrillatory effects of lidocaine can be attributed to drug-induced alterations in cellular electrophysiology, whereas those of bretylium are independent of such changes. Our study suggests that the reported antifibrillatory capability of bretylium is related to the drug's effects at sympathetic nerve terminals and thus is dependent upon an intact sympathetic nervous system.  相似文献

There is limited information on the physiological consequences associated with exposure to xenoestrogens under field conditions. The objectives of this study were to determine the presence of estrogenic chemicals in the St. Lawrence River and their effects on male reproduction in the spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius). Hepatic vitellogenin (VTG) mRNA levels in immature shiners indicate extensive estrogenic contamination spanning almost 50 km both upstream and downstream from the island of Montreal. Stages of spermatogenesis were assessed in fish captured at sites having varying levels of estrogenic contamination. In control fish, 95% had testis of either stage IV (50%) or stage V (45%) of spermatogenesis. At Ile Dorval, where VTG mRNA levels are moderate, fish had testes of stage III (38%) and IV (45%) and only 15% of fish were at spermatogenic stage V. In contrast, at Ilet Vert and Ile Beauregard, located in the sewage effluent plume from the City of Montreal and where hepatic VTG mRNA levels are high in fish, none of the fish were at stage V and 8% of fish at Ilet Vert were at stage II of development. Sperm concentration and various motility parameters were significantly lower in shiners from Ilet Vert as compared with those from Iles de la Paix (reference). Histological analyses of testes revealed that more than one-third of the fish captured at sites with the highest estrogenic contamination displayed intersex, a condition in which ovarian follicles were developing within the testis. These data indicate that there is significant estrogenic contamination in the St. Lawrence River that is associated with impaired reproductive function in male fish.  相似文献
