BackgroundMany of the markets in Nigeria are open, where foodstuffs are laid bare on flat trays and open baskets, directly exposing them to environmental contaminants. This study aimed at determining whether some food items on sale around an industrialized area of Ogun State are contaminated with trace metals.MethodsSeven different food items – Clarias gariepinus (roasted, fresh and smoked) Bos taurus (dried and fresh beef), zobo leaf (Hibiscus sabdariffa) and crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) were sampled from three major markets, namely: Lusada, Atan and Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA of Ogun State. They were analyzed for Lead, Cadmium, Nickel, Manganese and Zinc using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.ResultsCd was not detected in most of the food items across the markets. Pb, Ni and Mn were detected in very high concentrations above the maximum allowable limits by international regulatory agencies. Zn was the only metal that was generally below regulatory limits in food items across the three markets. The Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values were generally higher than values acceptable in food.ConclusionSome of the food items consumed in this area are not entirely safe from metal toxicity and this may have serious health consequences. 相似文献

A series of naphthalimide-chalcone/pyrazoline conjugates was prepared and evaluated for their anti-breast cancer potential against estrogen responsive, i.e. MCF-7 (ER+), and triple-negative, i.e. MDA-MB-231 (ER−), cell lines. The structure-activity-relationship (SAR) was deduced based on the influence of linker length, substituents on the phenyl ring and the generated functionalities, on anti-proliferative activities. Docking simulations further delineate the type of interactions of the designed molecules with the selected targets. This report discloses the scope of triazole tethered naphthalimide-chalcone/pyrazoline conjugates as anti breast cancer agents.Design, synthesis and anti-proliferative evaluation of naphthalimide–chalcone/pyrazoline conjugates. 相似文献

Public health professionals work with a variety of information sources to carry out their everyday activities. In recent years, interactive computational tools have become deeply embedded in such activities. Unlike the early days of computational tool use, the potential of tools nowadays is not limited to simply providing access to information; rather, they can act as powerful mediators of human-information discourse, enabling rich interaction with public health information. If public health informatics tools are designed and used properly, they can facilitate, enhance, and support the performance of complex cognitive activities that are essential to public health informatics, such as problem solving, forecasting, sense-making, and planning. However, the effective design and evaluation of public health informatics tools requires an understanding of the cognitive and perceptual issues pertaining to how humans work and think with information to perform such activities. This paper draws on research that has examined some of the relevant issues, including interaction design, complex cognition, and visual representations, to offer some human-centered design and evaluation considerations for public health informatics tools. 相似文献

Background Hypomagnesaemia is a relatively-common side effect of some systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT). Oral and intravenous magnesium (given as injections or short infusions) have problems arising from their poor tolerability, and need for frequent administrations, respectively. Objective Assessing the effectiveness and safety of weekly continuous magnesium infusions (CMI) in the management of SACT-related hypomagnesaemia. Methods CMIs (initiated at 10 mmol/day and up-titrated subject to response) were prescribed to patients with ≥3 magnesium readings <0.5 mmol/L despite intravenous replacement with bolus-or-short-infusions (BSI). Efficacy (compared to BSI): (a) reduction in the number of moderate/severe hypomagnesaemia episodes, and (b) increase in mean magnesium serum levels. Safety: non-occurrence of grade ≥3 toxicities (according to the common terminology criteria for adverse events v4). Results Three patients were treated (mean age: 62-years), pre-SACT levels were 0.629 ± 0.121 mmol/L. Efficacy: (a) 1 versus 18 episodes; (b) 0.639 ± 0.093 mmol/L versus 0.533 ± 0.191 mmol/L. All comparisons were statistically significant in favour of CMI (p < 0.001). No magnesium-related grade ≥2 side effects were observed. Conclusion CMIs resulted in a marked reduction in the number of episodes of hypomagnesaemia and higher magnesium levels, with no significant side effects. CMIs represent a potential option for the management of SACT-related hypomagnesaemia, although further research in an expanded cohort is required. 相似文献

Objective: To assess and compare the knowledge, risk-factors and preventive practices for colorectal cancer amongadults in Lagos State. Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional comparative study conducted among 607respondents selected from one rural (Ikorodu) and one urban (Surulere) LGA using a multistage sampling technique.Data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire administered by trained research assistants between April andSeptember 2017.Data was analyzed using Epi-info statistical software version 3.5.1. Univariate and bivariate analysiswas carried out and -p values of ≤0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Respondents’ knowledgeof colorectal cancer was generally low, (rural-78.2%, urban- 62.2%, p<0.001). Urban respondents were significantlymore knowledgeable than their rural counterparts (rural- 21.8%, urban- 37.8%, p<0.001). The presence of CRC riskfactorswere higher among urban respondents (urban-49.3%, rural-42.6%, p= 0.09), however this difference wasnot statistically significant. Preventive practices were generally poor in both groups, although more (18.1%) urbanrespondents significantly took preventive actions against CRC compared with rural (6.9%) respondents, (p<0.001).Increasing levels of education were significantly associated with higher knowledge level in both groups (p≤0.05).Conclusion: The level of knowledge of colorectal cancer was generally poor in both groups but significantly pooreramong rural respondents. The presence of known risk- factor was higher among urban respondents while preventivepractices were poor in both groups. 相似文献

Nigeria has the world''s 10th largest tuberculosis (TB) burden. Targeted community-based interventions can potentially help reduce TB incidence. We designed an intervention in a periurban community where 10 community volunteers were trained to provide community TB education and also detect and refer TB suspects to a nearby clinic. To determine the effect of the intervention on knowledge, attitude, and preventive practices of TB, we compared results from a pre-intervention survey with those of a post-intervention survey. Pre-intervention, respondents had a mean knowledge score of 10.6 ± 7.0 of a possible 34, a mean attitude score of 5.8 ± 3.3 of a possible 10, and a mean practice score of 5.3 ± 1.4 of a possible 7. The intervention significantly increased the mean knowledge score to 16 ± 5.4 (P < 0.001) and mean attitude score to 7.0 ± 1.8 (P < 0.001); however, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean practice score. Eight TB suspects were referred to the clinic, and one suspect was subsequently diagnosed with TB. The use of trained community volunteers to share information on TB improved the overall knowledge and attitudes of respondents. Continued empowerment of the community should be encouraged to promote TB prevention and care. 相似文献

Public health (PH) data can generally be characterized as big data. The efficient and effective use of this data determines the extent to which PH stakeholders can sufficiently address societal health concerns as they engage in a variety of work activities. As stakeholders interact with data, they engage in various cognitive activities such as analytical reasoning, decision-making, interpreting, and problem solving. Performing these activities with big data is a challenge for the unaided mind as stakeholders encounter obstacles relating to the data’s volume, variety, velocity, and veracity. Such being the case, computer-based information tools are needed to support PH stakeholders. Unfortunately, while existing computational tools are beneficial in addressing certain work activities, they fall short in supporting cognitive activities that involve working with large, heterogeneous, and complex bodies of data. This paper presents visual analytics (VA) tools, a nascent category of computational tools that integrate data analytics with interactive visualizations, to facilitate the performance of cognitive activities involving big data. Historically, PH has lagged behind other sectors in embracing new computational technology. In this paper, we discuss the role that VA tools can play in addressing the challenges presented by big data. In doing so, we demonstrate the potential benefit of incorporating VA tools into PH practice, in addition to highlighting the need for further systematic and focused research. 相似文献
