When counterphase spatio-temporal flicker is presented to the left and right eye continuous directional motion can be perceived. Here, we investigate whether this type of dichoptic motion can be observed at different depth planes. Four observers indicated direction of motion for dichoptic motion stimuli, presented in a context containing crossed and uncrossed disparity information in different conditions. Our results show that despite the presence of disparity cues in the stimulus, discrimination of motion direction remained maximal at interocular phase offsets that correspond to binocular motion perception at zero disparity. This constraint brings into question perception of dichoptic motion as the result of an early binocular motion system. We compared our results with predictions of a computational stereo-motion model [Qian, N. (1994). Computing stereo disparity and motion with known binocular cell properties. Neural Computations, 6, 390-404; Qian, N., & Andersen, R. A. (1997). A physiological model for motion-stereo integration and a unified explanation of Pulfrich-like phenomena. Vision Research, 37, 1683-1698]. In contrast to our empirical results, simulations of cell activation in this hybrid energy model predict maximal activation at non-zero disparities. It is concluded that perception of dichoptic motion is a by-product of early interocular combination at low contrasts rather than the result of a dedicated stereo-motion system.  相似文献

The present guidelines aim to provide comprehensive and precise information regarding the laboratory diagnosis of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) syphilis in East European countries. These recommendations contain important information for laboratory staff working with STIs and/or STI-related issues. Individual East European countries may be required to make minor national adjustments to these guidelines as a result of lack of accessibility to some reagents or equipment, or laws in a specific country.

BackgroundDiabetes mellitus and its complications are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Micronutrients have been evaluated as potential preventive and therapeutic measures in diabetes. The present study evaluated serum magnesium levels in diabetic patients—uncomplicated and those with macrovascular complications.MethodThis study was done on 150 subjects (60 normal, healthy controls and 90 diabetics). The 90 diabetic patients were selected in the following categories—30 patients without complications (Study Group I), 30 diabetic patients with coronary artery disease (Study Group II) and 30 diabetic patients with peripheral vascular disease (Study Group III). Plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin and serum magnesium levels were estimated in all the patients.ResultsFasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin levels were significantly higher in all the 3 study groups as compared to the controls, however, serum magnesium levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05). In diabetic patients with coronary atherosclerosis or peripheral vascular disease, a significant negative correlation was observed between serum magnesium and fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin indicating the role of hypomagnesemia in diabetic complications.ConclusionDietary supplementation with magnesium in addition to classical therapies for diabetes may help in prevention of diabetic complications.  相似文献

The inverse relationship between serum levels of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and the development of Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD) risk among diabetic patients was known for several decades. Besides the decreasing quantity of HDL, the qualitative functions of HDL are adversely affected during uncompensated oxidative stress among diabetics and leads to implication of several complications such as dyslipidemia, lipid peroxidation, endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Therefore we have undertaken this study to determine anti-atherogenic property of HDL by measuring it's one of the associated enzymes; paraoxonase (PON) among type 2 diabetes patients, along with the serum activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) as an index of antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation end product, i.e malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker for oxidative stress. This study included a total of 56 untreated type 2 diabetic patients and 29 healthy volunteers as controls. FBS, PPBS, HbA1C and fasting lipid profile were measured in both the study groups. Activity of basal PON, SOD and plasma MDA levels was determined in both the study groups according to standard clinical laboratory procedures. All the diabetic patients were under poor glycemic control. Serum levels of HDL between the two study groups are not significantly differed. But, serum basal PON and SOD activity were significantly decreased, whereas MDA levels were highly elevated (284 ± 59 nM/mL/min, 111 ± 35 μmol/L, 10.38 ± 4.17 IU/mL respectively) when compared with healthy controls (371 ± 46 nM/mL/min, 63 ± 12 μmol/L, 16.91 ± 2.89 IU/mL respectively). Although there is no significant reduction in concentrations of HDL in diabetics when compared with controls, but there was a significant decrease in anti-atherogenic property i.e. activity of paraoxonase enzyme. Moreover the serum activity of paraoxonase was significant and negatively correlated with MDA levels (r = - 0.53, P < 0.001) as well as with FBS (r = - 0.30, P < 0.05). Therefore the qualitative functions of HDL are significantly affected by hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress. Hence, we concluded that the quality of HDL is most important in order to determine oxidative stress related complications in diabetes mellitus than its concentration.
