In-depth interviews were conducted with 50 HIV-positive adults (23 women, 27 men) with access to care at a non-governmental organization in Chennai, India to gain a broad understanding of how they managed their HIV infection. Using a Social Cognitive Model of Health, we identified factors within the model's three domains--Personal, Environmental, and Behavioral--that are applicable to this socio-cultural context. The Personal domain's factors were a positive self-concept, family-focused goals, and treatment optimism; the Environmental domain comprised family-based support, treatment availability, access and quality, and HIV stigma and discrimination; and the Behavior domain's factors were medication adherence and health habits, sexual behavior, and social relationships and emotional well-being. Significant differences for many of the factors within the three domains were observed across married men and women, widowed women, unmarried men, and female sex workers. Implications for an enhanced intervention for HIV-infected individuals in similar treatment settings are discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The ability to "read the mind" of other individuals, that is, to infer their mental state by interpreting subtle social cues, is indispensable in human social interaction. The neuropeptide oxytocin plays a central role in social approach behavior in nonhuman mammals. METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject design, 30 healthy male volunteers were tested for their ability to infer the affective mental state of others using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) after intranasal administration of 24 IU oxytocin. RESULTS: Oxytocin improved performance on the RMET compared with placebo. This effect was pronounced for difficult compared with easy items. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that oxytocin improves the ability to infer the mental state of others from social cues of the eye region. Oxytocin might play a role in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder, which is characterized by severe social impairment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with increased levels of both negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI)-referred to as type-D personality-are at increased risk of adverse cardiac events. We used item response theory (IRT) to evaluate NA, SI, and type-D personality as measured by the DS14. The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate the relative contribution of individual items to the measurement precision at the cutoff to distinguish type-D from non-type-D personality and (b) to investigate the comparability of NA, SI, and type-D constructs across the general population and clinical populations. METHODS: Data from representative samples including 1316 respondents from the general population, 427 respondents diagnosed with coronary heart disease, and 732 persons suffering from hypertension were analyzed using the graded response IRT model. RESULTS: In Study 1, the information functions obtained in the IRT analysis showed that (a) all items had highest measurement precision around the cutoff and (b) items are most informative at the higher end of the scale. In Study 2, the IRT analysis showed that measurements were fairly comparable across the general population and clinical populations. CONCLUSIONS: The DS14 adequately measures NA and SI, with highest reliability in the trait range around the cutoff. The DS14 is a valid instrument to assess and compare type-D personality across clinical groups.  相似文献

Gaze pursuit, 'attention pursuit' and their effects on cortical activations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A moving object draws our attention to it and we can track the object with smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). Gaze and attention are usually directed to the same object during SPEM. In this study we investigated whether gaze and attention can be divided during pursuit. We explored the cortical control of ocular tracking and attentive tracking and the role of focused and divided attention. We presented a sinusoidally moving target for pursuit and simultaneously a stationary target for fixation. Gaze could be directed to the pursuit target and attention to the fixation target or vice versa, or gaze and attention were directed to the same (moving or stationary) target. We found that gaze (overt) and attentive (covert) pursuit similarly activated the cortical oculomotor network. Gaze pursuit showed higher activations than attentive pursuit. Activations, specific to the dissociation of attention from gaze and independent of eye movements, were found solely in the posterior parietal cortex. A cue indicating a forthcoming attention task activated large parts of the cortical SPEM network, as a kind of preparatory mechanism. We did not find any attention-related regions outside the well-known visuo-oculomotor network. We conclude that attention control during gaze pursuit and gaze fixation occur within the cortical SPEM network, supporting the premotor theory of attention [Rizzolatti, G., Riggio, L., Dascola, I. & Umilta, C. Anthropogenic compounds with the capacity to interact with the steroid-binding site of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) pose health risks to humans and other vertebrates including fish. Building on studies of human SHBG, we have applied in silico drug discovery methods to identify potential binders for SHBG in zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model aquatic organism. Computational methods, including; homology modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, virtual screening, and 3D QSAR analysis, successfully identified 6 non-steroidal substances from the ZINC chemical database that bind to zebrafish SHBG (zfSHBG) with low-micromolar to nanomolar affinities, as determined by a competitive ligand-binding assay. We also screened 80,000 commercial substances listed by the European Chemicals Bureau and Environment Canada, and 6 non-steroidal hits from this in silico screen were tested experimentally for zfSHBG binding. All 6 of these compounds displaced the [3H]5α-dihydrotestosterone used as labeled ligand in the zfSHBG screening assay when tested at a 33 μM concentration, and 3 of them (hexestrol, 4-tert-octylcatechol, and dihydrobenzo(a)pyren-7(8H)-one) bind to zfSHBG in the micromolar range. The study demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale in silico screening of anthropogenic compounds that may disrupt or highjack functionally important protein:ligand interactions. Such studies could increase the awareness of hazards posed by existing commercial chemicals at relatively low cost.  相似文献

Inspired by the discovery of dimeric motor proteins capable of undergoing transportation in living cells, significant efforts have been expended recently to the fabrication of track-walking nanomotors possessing two foot-like components that each can bind or detach from an array of anchorage groups on the track in response to local events of reagent consumption. The central problem in fabricating bipedal nanomotors is how the motor as a whole can gain the synergic capacity of directional track-walking, given the fact that each pedal component alone often is incapable of any directional drift. Implemented bipedal motors to date solve this thermodynamically intricate problem by an intuitive strategy that requires a hetero-pedal motor, multiple anchorage species for the track, and multiple reagent species for motor operation. Here we performed realistic molecular mechanics calculations on molecule-scale models to identify a detailed molecular mechanism by which motor-level directionality arises from a homo-pedal motor along a minimally heterogeneous track. Optimally, the operation may be reduced to a random supply of a single species of reagents to allow the motor's autonomous functioning. The mechanism suggests a distinct class of fabrication targets of drastically reduced system requirements. Intriguingly, a defective form of the mechanism falls into the realm of the well known Brownian motor mechanism, yet distinct features emerge from the normal working of the mechanism.  相似文献

Patterns in food-web structure have frequently been examined in static food webs, but few studies have attempted to delineate patterns that materialize in food webs under nonequilibrium conditions. Here, using one of nature's classical nonequilibrium systems as the food-web database, we test the major assumptions of recent advances in food-web theory. We show that a complex web of interactions between insect herbivores and their natural enemies displays significant architectural flexibility over a large fluctuation in the natural abundance of the major herbivore, the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana). Importantly, this flexibility operates precisely in the manner predicted by recent foraging-based food-web theories: higher-order mobile generalists respond rapidly in time and space by converging on areas of increasing prey abundance. This "birdfeeder effect" operates such that increasing budworm densities correspond to a cascade of increasing diversity and food-web complexity. Thus, by integrating foraging theory with food-web ecology and analyzing a long-term, natural data set coupled with manipulative field experiments, we are able to show that food-web structure varies in a predictable manner. Furthermore, both recent food-web theory and longstanding foraging theory suggest that this very same food-web flexibility ought to be a potent stabilizing mechanism. Interestingly, we find that this food-web flexibility tends to be greater in heterogeneous than in homogeneous forest plots. Because our results provide a plausible mechanism for boreal forest effects on populations of forest insect pests, they have implications for forest and pest management practices.  相似文献

Theory of mind (ToM) refers to the ability to attribute independent mental states, such as beliefs, preferences and desires, to the self and others. Neuroimaging studies of normal adults have consistently demonstrated the importance of particular brain regions for ToM, the superior temporal sulcus (STS), temporal pole (TP) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). However, there are little data showing how ToM develops during childhood and adolescence. Such data are important for understanding the development of social functioning and its disorders. The authors used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study age-related changes in brain activity associated with ToM during childhood and early adolescence (9-16 years). Normally developed children and adolescents demonstrated significant activation in the bilateral STS, the TP adjacent to the amygdala (TP/Amy) and the MPFC. Furthermore, the authors found a positive correlation between age and the degree of activation in the dorsal part of the MPFC; in contrast, a negative correlation was found for the ventral part of the MPFC. The authors also found a positive correlation between the Z coordinate of the peak activation in the MPFC and age. The data indicated that activity in the MPFC associated with ToM shifted from the ventral to the dorsal part of the MPFC during late childhood and adolescence. No age-related changes were found in the STS and the TP/Amy regions. The authors consider that the age-related brain activity observed in the present study may be associated with the maturation of the prefrontal cortex and the associated development of cognitive functions.  相似文献

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The clinical utility of interactive computer-aided diagnosis (ICAD) systems depends on clinical relevance and visual similarity between the queried breast lesions and the ICAD-selected reference regions. The objective of this study is to develop and test a new ICAD scheme that aims improve visual similarity of ICAD-selected reference regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A large and diverse reference library involving 3,000 regions of interests was established. For each queried breast mass lesion by the observer, the ICAD scheme segments the lesion, classifies its boundary spiculation level, and computes 14 image features representing the segmented lesion and its surrounding tissue background. A conditioned k-nearest neighbor algorithm is applied to select a set of the 25 most "similar" lesions from the reference library. After computing the mutual information between the queried lesion and each of these initially selected 25 lesions, the scheme displays the six reference lesions with the highest mutual information scores. To evaluate the automated selection process of the six "visually similar" lesions to the queried lesion, we conducted a two-alternative forced-choice observer preference study using 85 queried mass lesions. Two sets of reference lesions selected by one new automated ICAD scheme and the other previously reported scheme using a subjective rating method were randomly displayed on the left and right side of the queried lesion. Nine observers were asked to decide for each of the 85 queried lesions which one of the two reference sets was "more visually similar" to the queried lesion. RESULTS: In classification of mass boundary spiculation levels, the overall agreement rate between the automated scheme and an observer is 58.8% (Kappa = 0.31). In observer preference study, the nine observers preferred on average the reference lesion sets selected by the automated scheme as being more visually similar than the set selected by the subjective rating approach in 53.2% of the queried lesions. The results were not significantly different for the two methods (P = .128). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that using the new automated ICAD scheme, the interobserver variability related issues can thus be avoided. Furthermore, the new scheme maintains the similar performance level as the previous scheme using the subjective rating method that can select reference sets that are significantly more visually similar (P < .05) than when using traditional ICAD schemes in which the mass boundary spiculation levels are not accurately detected and quantified.  相似文献
