This study was designed: 1) to evaluate the effect of weight loss on body fat distribution, 2) to determine whether indices of body fat distribution can be considered as a prognostic indicator for the ability to lose weight and 3) to evaluate whether a change of body fat distribution is associated with changes in plasma glucose, lipids and lipoproteins in both sexes in order to evaluate a gender difference.

63 obese subjects (41 women and 22 men) were treated on an outpatient basis with an energy-reduced, protein-enriched low calorie diet (3150-4200 kJ/day) for a 6-month period. They were divided in different groups according to gender and body fat distribution using the waist-to-hip circumference ratio.

Body fat topography can be altered by dieting, but not by more than it increases when a person gains weight. Body fat distribution seems to be a significant prognostic indicator for the ability to lose weight in women but not in men. Although body weight and the waist-to-hip circumference decreased significantly, no relationships were found between percent decrease in these parameters and percent changes in plasma glucose, lipids and lipoproteins.

We conclude that an important caloric deficit may lead to a series of metabolic improvements but that gender and the type of fat distribution are important confounding factors in the prediction of metabolic success.  相似文献

Feeding mineral-deficient diets enhances absorptive efficiency as an attempt of the body to compensate for the lack of an essential nutrient. Under certain circumstances, it does not succeed; and nutritional deficiency is produced. Our hypothesis was that inulin-type fructans (ITF), which are known to affect mineral absorption, could increase Ca and Fe bioavailability in Ca- and Fe-deficient rats. Male Wistar rats (n = 48, 4 weeks old) were assigned to 1 of 8 groups derived from 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with 2 levels of added Fe (0 and 35 mg/kg), Ca (0 and 5 g/kg), and ITF (0 and 100 g/kg) for 33 days. The Fe status (hemoglobin, serum Fe, total Fe-binding capacity, transferrin saturation, liver minerals) was evaluated. Tibia minerals (Ca, Mg, and Zn), bone strength, and histomorphometry were determined. In nondeficient rats, ITF supplementation did not affect Fe status or organ minerals, with the exception of tibia Mg. Moreover, ITF improved bone resilience and led to a reduction in eroded surface per body surface and number of osteoclasts per area. In Ca-deficient rats, ITF increased liver (Fe and Zn) and tibia (Zn) mineral levels but impaired tibia Mg, yield load, and resilience. In conclusion, ITF worsened the tibia Mg levels and elastic properties when supplemented in Ca-deficient diets. In contrast, although bone Ca was not affected in nondeficient rats under the present experimental conditions, bone quality improved, as demonstrated by a moderate reduction in femur osteoclast resorption and significant increases in tibia Mg content and elasticity.  相似文献

目的确定巴戟天中菊淀粉型六聚糖单体(IHS)的抗抑郁作用。方法采用经典大小鼠强迫性游泳和程序化大鼠低速率差式强化(DRL 72s)法。结果在小鼠强迫性游泳模型上,po IHS 80 mg·kg-1与 ip地昔帕明 10 mg·kg-1的作用类似,能明显缩短小鼠的不动时间;同样,po IHS 20mg·kg-1也缩短大鼠强迫性游泳的不动时间,其效果与加地昔帕明 40 mg·kg-1相当。另外,在大鼠 DRL 72s模型上,ig IHS 5~10mg·kg-l和地昔帕明 5 g·kg-1,均增加大鼠DRL- 72s的强化数。结论 IHS具有抗抑郁作用,是巴戟天中抗抑郁有效成分。  相似文献

Background: Wholegrain grains and cereals contain a wide range of potentially protective factors that are relevant to gastrointestinal health. The prebiotics best studied are fructans [fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin] and galactooligosaccharides (GOS). These and other short‐chain carbohydrates can also be poorly absorbed in the small intestine (named fermentable oligo‐, di‐ and monosaccharides and polyols; FODMAPs) and may have important implications for the health of the gut. Methods: In the present study, FODMAPs, including fructose in excess of glucose, FOS (nystose, kestose), GOS (raffinose, stachyose) and sugar polyols (sorbitol, mannitol), were quantified using high‐performance liquid chromatography with an evaporative light scattering detector. Total fructan was quantified using an enzymic hydrolysis method. Results: Fifty‐five commonly consumed grains, breakfast cereals, breads, pulses and biscuits were analysed. Total fructan were the most common short‐chain carbohydrate present in cereal grain products and ranged (g per portion as eaten) from 1.12 g in couscous to 0 g in rice; 0.6 g in dark rye bread to 0.07 g in spelt bread; 0.96 g in wheat‐free muesli to 0.11 g in oats; and 0.81 g in muesli fruit bar to 0.05 g in potato chips. Raffinose and stachyose were most common in pulses. Conclusions: Composition tables including FODMAPs and prebiotics (FOS and GOS) that are naturally present in food will greatly assist research aimed at understanding their physiological role in the gut.  相似文献

Background and Aim: Functional gastrointestinal symptoms are common and their management is often a difficult clinical problem. The link between food intake and symptom induction is recognized. This review aims to describe the evidence base for restricting rapidly fermentable, short‐chain carbohydrates (FODMAPs) in controlling such symptoms. Methods: The nature of FODMAPs, their mode of action in symptom induction, results of clinical trials and the implementation of the diet are described. Results: FODMAPs are widespread in the diet and comprise a monosaccharide (fructose), a disaccharide (lactose), oligosaccharides (fructans and galactans), and polyols. Their ingestion increases delivery of readily fermentable substrate and water to the distal small intestine and proximal colon, which are likely to induce luminal distension and induction of functional gut symptoms. The restriction of their intake globally (as opposed to individually) reduces functional gut symptoms, an effect that is durable and can be reversed by their reintroduction into the diet (as shown by a randomized placebo‐controlled trial). The diet has a high compliance rate. However it requires expert delivery by a dietitian trained in the diet. Breath hydrogen tests are useful to identify individuals who can completely absorb a load of fructose and lactose so that dietary restriction can be less stringent. Conclusions: The low FODMAP diet provides an effective approach to the management of patients with functional gut symptoms. The evidence base is now sufficiently strong to recommend its widespread application.  相似文献

The effect of several fructose polysaccharides or fructans, isolated from the fresh cloves of garlic (Allium sativum L.), on the activity of the enzyme adenosine deaminase (ADA) is reported. The oligomers consisting of between 9 and 14 monosaccharide units have the highest enzyme inhibiting activity, whereas the higner polymers with a degree of polymerization up to 60, as well as lower sugars, have little or no activity at all. Since the inhibition is of the competitive type, it is assumed that a close structural relationship to the natural substrate, adenosine, is required for the interaction of the inhibitors with the enzyme molecule, presumably through binding to its active centre.  相似文献

Garlic (Allium sativum) is known for its innumerable biological activities including immunomodulation. Aged garlic extract (AGE), an odorless garlic preparation, has been shown to have superior immunomodulatory properties over raw garlic extract. Although garlic is a very rich source of fructans (17%, fresh weight basis), AGE contains only 0.22% of raw garlic fructans. Aged garlic fructans (AGF) have recently been shown to possess immunomodulatory activities in vitro. Natural adjuvants capable of eliciting better immune response of a model antigen are important in developing newer vaccines. In the present study, the adjuvant activity of AGF has been investigated in BALB/c mice using ovalbumin (OVA, 30 µg) as an experimental antigen. The body weights of animals did not change significantly indicating that the administration of garlic fructans is well-tolerated. AGF produce a significant humoral (serum IgG) response to OVA in BALB/c mice administered mucosally by either intranasal or oral route—a delayed response appearing on 50th day at a dose of 30 µg AGF by intranasal route. However, the serum IgG response was seen earlier on 35th day at a dose of 100 µg AGF by oral route. Higher concentrations of AGF (>50 µg) were inhibitory for adjuvant activity by intranasal administration. These observations indicate that AGF display immunoadjuvant activity for a test antigen though the humoral immune response is delayed.  相似文献
