The purpose of the article is to point out the relevance of asking and answering philosophical questions in nursing. The author characterizes philosophical questions as higher order questions that cannot be answered by empirical observations alone. Questions about the nature of nursing reality, about the nature of nursing knowledge, and about the validity of ethical principles are mentioned as examples of such questions. The means for dealing with philosophical questions in nursing range from formal, logical analysis to philosophical poems.

The underlying philosophical assumptions associated with the current vogue for humanistic and holistic approaches to nursing have not been subjected to systematic scrutiny, laying nursing open to the charge of being anti-scientific and even irrational. This paper outlines some of these assumptions and their origins, and proceeds to a brief survey of their impact on nursing theory, education and practice. It concludes with a call for the elucidation and consolidation of nursing practice which reflects phenomenological and humanistic alternatives to the natural science principles which have characterized traditional medical practice. In this connection I have used the term 'positivism' to refer to a general orientation according to which the world can only be known through observable entities, and regularities may be demonstrated and general laws verified through their measurement and quantification.

The philosophical tradition of evolutionary idealism is explored as an appropriate metaphysical foundation for holistic nursing science. Some implications of this tradition for theory development, testing, and practice are identified. It is suggested that evolutionary idealism can form an appropriate philosophical foundation for nursing theory development.

This paper discusses various phenomenological and hermeneutical approaches within international nursing research. The first part contains an extensive literature review which shows that the Anglo-American debate into qualitative research is based on translated material of German philosophers, which is then interpreted not only according to language but also to culture. Philosophical terms are therefore differently interpreted and used. German nursing research is beginning to influence this international debate. The second part contains a methodological discussion of original philosophical texts and international nursing research and provides the foundation for a research method based on Gadamer's philosophical Hermeneutics. It is concluded that qualitative nursing research can only be justified by reference to a philosophical foundation.

This paper explores some questions about the use of models of nursing These questions make various assumptions about the nature of models of nursing, in general and in particular Underlying these assumptions are various philosophical positions which are explored through an introduction to postmodernist approaches in philosophical criticism To illustrate these approaches, a critique of the Roper et al model is developed, and more general attitudes towards models of nursing are examined It is suggested that postmodernism offers a challenge to many of the assumptions implicit in models of nursing, and that a greater awareness of these assumptions should lead to nursing care being better informed where such models are in use

Because every scientific theory and all research methods are tied to some philosophical framework, it is important that scientists within a given discipline be aware of the philosophical orientations that serve as the basis for developing theory and advancing knowledge. Nurse scientists have been challenged recently to examine the discipline's philosophical underpinnings in order to understand the evolutionary process of nursing science. The inclusion of the study of philosophy of science in doctoral nursing curriculum has remained a topic of periodic discourse. Whereas some assert that it promotes the essential process of philosophical reflection necessary for scientific exploration of relevant phenomenon, others contend that nurse scientists' preoccupation with this issue has diverted their attention from the real business of nursing science—that of knowledge development that will lead to legitimization of nursing as a discipline. Philosophy of science provides a useful frame of reference in which to appreciate the unfolding of nursing as a discipline. It should not be viewed as a distraction but rather a critical step in the transformation of the doctoral student into a productive nurse scientist. Doctoral programs remain the most logical place in which to educate future scholars regarding nursing's unique philosophical foundations and their implications for scientific inquiry and continued knowledge development. Creating and maintaining liaisons between nursing and philosophy departments—as well as requiring courses that emphasize the interrelationships among philosophy of science, nursing theory, and nursing research—are just a few of the strategies whereby doctoral programs can actively promote advancement of the discipline.

Title. Reinstating the ‘Queen’: understanding philosophical inquiry in nursing Aim. This paper is an introduction to the characteristics of philosophical inquiry. Background. Despite over a century of philosophical thinking in nursing, philosophical inquiry has yet to be positioned as contributing substantially to the field of nursing’s inquiry. There is a need to articulate the nature and characteristics of philosophical inquiry for researchers new to this perspective. Method. We begin by addressing a common question that surfaces when one begins a work that is philosophical in nature, how does one differentiate between nursing philosophy and nursing theory? We then address the nature and characteristics of philosophical inquiry. We conclude by considering the question of whether philosophical inquiry might be considered a form of qualitative inquiry. Findings. Unlike science, which relies upon investigative methods, philosophical inquiry relies upon the capacities to think and reason. Problems characteristic of philosophical inquiry include conceptual clarification, analysis of arguments and problems related to the ontology, epistemology and ethics of nursing. Although methodological approaches to philosophical inquiry are diverse, common tools include assumptions and the intellectual processes of conceptualizing, judging and reasoning within a context of wonder. Conclusion. Some have argued that to neglect philosophy in nursing is to place the discipline at risk. However, there is little guidance available to researchers new to this method of inquiry. By providing a beginning roadmap, our hope is that philosophical inquiry will take its place alongside scientific methods of inquiry with the goal of constructing robust knowledge for the discipline of nursing.

Giarelli E 《Nursing ethics》2003,10(3):255-268
This philosophical inquiry examines the nature of the technology of genetic predisposition testing and its relation to patients as whole persons. The bioethical principles of non-maleficence, beneficence, autonomy and justice are judged insufficient to resolve issues associated with use. A new principle of 'sustained being', drawn from philosophical propositions of Pellegrino, is suggested. The new principle is suited to an evolving practice and is compatible with consequentialist, deontological and relational ethics theories. The notion of 'taking care' is related to nursing in genetic health care to form a standard of conduct and a moral imperative to 'safeguard being'.
