CHANGE OF BLOOD LACTATE,PYRUVATE, β-HYDROXYBUTYRATE AND ACETOACETATE AT ANAEROBIC THRESHOLD DURING EXERCISE IN HEALTHY SUBJECTS
Abstract:Arterial blood lactate, pyruvate, β-hydroxybutyratc at the anaerobic threshold during incremental exercise test were determined in ten normal males, The work rate increment was 15 watts/min until the point of intolerance. Ventilation and gas exchange were computed breath by breath and blood samples were taken at rest, each progressive 30 watts and also at the 2nd and 5th recovery time. We determined the change pattern of arterial lactate to pyruvate ratio(L/P), as an index of the NADH/NAD ratio. In 1983, Yeh, et al reported that there was no threshold for lactate increase during exercise but contrarily in our experiments, there was an increased lactate and L/P ratio when the anaerobic threshold reached. Our data showed at least two components: the first componet was essentially flat and the second one relatively steep and appeared when the L/P ratio increased. Lactate and pyruvate further increased at the 2nd and 5th recovery time but pyruvate increased even more causing L/P to decrease. These results support the concept that the increase of lactate during exercise reflects a reduction in the cell redox state but individual variation should be taken into consideration.
