Radical polymerizations and copolymerizations of 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate ( 1 ) and its reaction product with 2-phenylbutyric acid ( 2 ), 2-hydroxytrimethylene methacrylate 2-phenylbutyrate ( 3 ), were studied using 2,2′-azodiisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, or H₂O₂ (with UV irradiation) as initiators, and also the influence of the experimental conditions (temperature, concentration, time) on the yield. Due to the reactivity of the oxirane moiety, poly(2,3-epoxy-propyl methacrylate) can easily be modified by ring opening reactions, e.g. with carboxylic acids.
