Abstract:After combined stained with alizarin red S and trypan blue, the endothelial cells of desiccated corneas preserved for 77 days showed that the cellular circumference was blurred and the hexagonal borders could faintly be visible and the mode of distribution of round or elliptical nuclei with blue discoloration was essentially the same as that of fresh normal cornea. Under electron microscope, the cellular outline could be seen with abundant and distinct organellae within the cytoplasm and essentially complete membrane; but the nuclear substance were pale and partially pyknotic. It is suggested that the endothelial cells of cornea preserved by dehydration and desiccation still has vital signs.
