Association Between Family History of Atrial Fibrillation and Recurrence After Catheter Ablation in Young Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Objectives:To investigate the association between family history of atrial fibrillation(AF)and recurrence after catheter ablation in young AF patients.Methods:China Atrial Fibrillation Registry study had prospectively enrolled 25512 AF patients between August 2011 and December 2018.After the exclusion of patients with valvular AF,prior history of ablation,and follow-up less than 3 months,2919 AF patients aged≤50 years old and received catheter ablation at enrollment were included in the analysis.All patients were followed up at 3,6 and 12 months after the procedure,and every 6 months thereafter.Family history of AF was defined as the occurrence of AF in first-degree relatives(parents or siblings)diagnosed with AF at age 65 years or younger and before the onset of the case in this study.Multivariate Cox regression was performed to adjust other known risk factors of AF recurrence and to explore the association between family history of AF and recurrence after catheter ablation.Results:There were 289 patients(9.9%)with and 2630 patients without family history of AF.After a mean follow-up of(24.05±19.38)months,1272(43.6%)patients suffered AF recurrence.Patients with family history of AF faced a higher risk of recurrence(26.70 vs.21.19 per 100 patient-years,P=0.0033).After multivariable adjustment,a 27%higher risk of recurrence was observed in patients with family history of AF than those without family history of AF(HR=1.27,95%CI:1.07-1.50,P=0.0056).Conclusions:Family history of AF is independently associated with a higher recurrence rate after catheter ablation in young AF patients.
