| Abstract: | The multimodality evoked potentials in 36 patients with endemic cretinism were studied.The BAEPs in all patients were found to be abnormal.The elec- trocochleographies by transtympanic recordings were carried out in 15 cases and showed either as electric silence or as delay in NI component in all patients. The SSEPs were examined in 33 cases and showed abnormal changes in 9 cases (27.2%).The abnormal rate in VEPs was 25.5%(8/34).The authours concluded from the electrophysiological study that the site of the lesion responsi- ble for the deaf in patients with endemic cretinism was the cochlea.The retro- choclear auditory nerve and it's conductive system in the braim stem were in- tct in the iodine deficiency disease of the brain.The cortical atrophy and some lesions in the visual route caused by the deficiency of iodine and thyroidal hormone may be responsibly for the abnormal SSEPs and VEPs. |
