Abstract:Objective To compare the temperature properties ofmoxa ball-heeated traditional silver needles 18 cm and 16 cm long in human body. Methods Seventy-two subjects were randomly allocated to group A (single needle of 1.1 x180 mm), group B (single needle of 1.1x160 mm), group C (several needles of 1.1x180 mm) and group D (several needles of 1.1x180 mm), 18 cases each. In all four groups of subjects, a temperature measuring silver needle was inserted into a temperature measuring point in the medial superior part of the left buttock (7 cm below the highest point of the iliac crest and 7 cm lateral to posterior median line). In groups C and D, four silver needles as long as the temperature measuring silver needle, on each of whose tails a 1.3 g moxa ball was put, were inserted into four matching points 2 cm superior, inferior, left and right to the temperature measuring point in the buttock. After the moxa ball was ignited, the needle temperature at 3, 33, 63 and 66 mm above the tip of the temperature measuring silver needle was measured automatically and dynamically using a digit thermoscope. Results There were statistically significant differences in the highest temperatures at 3, 33, 63 and 66 mm above the tip of the temperature measuring silver needle between group A and group B or C (P〈0.01,P〈0.05) and between groups C and D (P〈0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the highest temperatures at 3, 33, 63 and 66 mm above the tip of the temperature measuring silver needle between groups B and D (P〉0.05). Conclusions The highest temperatures of the needle tips and bodies in warm needling moxibustion with two sizes of silver needles reach over 41℃ in single needle placement and over 43 ℃ in several needles placement. Under the same heating source and needle insertion depth, the highest temperature of a silver needle in human body is influenced by silver needle length and the needling mode. The shorter the silver needle, the higher the maximum temperature. The maximum temperature is higher in several needles placement than in single needle placement.
