The parental cognition on the pediatric adolescent gynecologic examination:a qualitative study

Objective To explore parental cognition and attitude about pediatric adolescent gynecological examination and sexual health education.Methods By means of convenience sampling,a sample of 76 parents,which include 55 females and 21 males who underwent physical examination at the Health Management Center of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,Chongqing Affiliated Hospital,Chongqing People′s Hospital in May 2019 were selected as the research subjects.Open-ended and face-to-face interviews were applied for data collection and the classical grounded theory method was used to sort out and analyze the interview data.Results 65.45%female and 90.48%male parental interviewees supported pediatric adolescent gynecological examination,the main reasons were premature first intercourse,gynecological inflammation diseases,a young trend in gynecological diseases,sexually transmitted disease spreading and HPV vaccination implementation.80.00%female and 80.95%male objects considered that there was necessity to enhance sexual education among the pediatric adolescent girls.There were three main reasons,such as inadequate sexual education,sexual assault prevention and unhealthy sexual information on the internet.Conclusions From the perspective of parents′cognition,it is feasible and necessary to carry out gynecological examination at different levels and contents for different stages of adolescent girls,and sexual health education carried out in the process of gynecological examination is potentially of great benefit to adolescent girls.
