Construction of Health Empowerment Need Assessment Scale for Elderly Patients with Chronic Disease and Its Reliability and Validity

Objective To develop a health empowerment need assessment scale for elderly patients with chronic diseases in China, and to test its reliability and validity. Methods After literature review and with the reference of relevant tools, the initial item pool was compiled. Then the preliminary scale was developed after 2 rounds of Delphi expert consultations. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 236 elderly patients with chronic diseases in a tertiary grade-A comprehensive hospital in Guangzhou from March to December 2021 to test the reliability and validity of the scale. Results The final scale consisted of 30 items in 5 dimensions. The exploratory factor analysis extracted 5 common factors and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 64.24%. The content validity index of each item was 0.72~1.00, and the content validity index of the scale was 0.94. Internal consistency test showed that Cronbach's α coefficient and half reliability of each dimension were 0.78~0.90 and 0.68~0.83 respectively, while those of the total scale were 0.92 and 0.76 respectively. Conclusion The health empowerment need assessment scale for elderly patients with chronic diseases developed in this research can be used as a tool to assess the health need of elderly patients in chronically conditions, which can provide reference for scientifically formulating and implementing personalized chronic disease management to meet the needs of patients.
