Abstract: | This paper reports the resultjs of superior
mesenteric ve.in-inferior vena cava silk ta.ffeta
shunt, disconnection of portoazygos and splenec-
tomy in 50 cases o,f portal hypertension. 45 are
due to portal or postnecrotic hepa.titis liver cir-
thosis and 5 schistosomiasis. Of the 24 emer-
gency operations performecl for a.cut.e bleeding,
22 are due to ruptured esophageal varices and
2 48 hr rebleeding after spZenectomy. The sur-
gery stops the bleeding in all cas.es. Oine dies of
pulmonary infection and another of hepatic fai-
lure. The overaii operative mortality for both
elective and emergency shunt is 4To. 39 patients
are followed up for l-6 years without rebleeding.
