Abstract:Discs prepared from a new composite restorative and initially containing 11.2 mg/g of fluoride ion were immersed in water and the fluoride released was measured over a period in excess of 4 years. There was a short burst effect, followed by a decreasing rate of release, which reached a steady rate of about 0.2 μg/cm2 fluoride per day, equivalent to zero order release, after approximately 8 months. After 1591 days of water immersion, the discs retained over 72% of their original fluoride content. There was no change in Barcol hardness of the specimens after leaching. It was also demonstrated that the fluoride release rate is only moderately reduced by coating the discs with a non-fluoride bonding agent.
