THE EFFECT OF SELENIUM INTAKE ON MYOCARDIAL NECROSIS INDUCED BY VIRAL INFECTION IN MICE
Abstract:Weanling Kumming mice of both sexes were randamized into groups consuming a natural or semisynthetic low selenium diet with or without selenium supplementation. The control group had a stock diet with 0.334 ppm Se. After 6 weeks feeding, animals of the same dietary group were put in mating. The sucklings of their 7th day of life were given intra-peritoneally a dose of either Coxsackie virus B4 which was isolated from the blood of a Keshan disease patient or virus-free culture. Seven days after the injection, animals were autopsied for histopathological examination.The blood selenium levels of sucklings were parallel to that of their parents and in consistent with their selenium intakes. The frequency and severity of the heart lesion observed in virus challenged animals were inversely related to their blood selenium contents. The incidences of Se-deficient groups were significantly higher than that of the Se-suficient groups. Selenium supplementation depressed the heart lesion so effectively as to be comparable with that of the control group. No changes were found in virus-free culture acceptors.The results suggested a protective effect of selenium against viral infection indicated by myocardial necrosis in mice. Perhaps, it might throw a light on the etiology of Keshan disease.
