Effects of aerobic exercise combined with low intensity resistance exercise training on patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of aerobic exercise combined with resistance exercise on pulmonary function,motion ability and life quality of patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Methods Totally 120 patients with severe COPD and treated in our hospital in 2017 and 2018 were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group,each of 60.In addition to the routine medication and nursing,the control group underwent aerobic exercise,while the observation group took up aerobic exercise combined with progressive resistance exercise.The pulmonary function,6-minute walking test(6MWT),30-second sit-up test(30-STS)and 30-second forearm flexion test(30-ACT)were conducted before and after the intervention for both groups.The life quality and negative emotion were also evaluated using the self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)and the self-rating depression scale(SDS).ResultsAfter training,significant improvement was observed in the forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1),forced vital capacity(FVC),FEV1/FVC,6MWT,30-STS and 30-ACT of both groups,with those of the observation group significantly higher than those of the control group(P<0.05).Meanwhile,the CAT,SAS and SDS scores decreased significantly after training,with those of the observation group significantly lower than those of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Aerobic exercise combined with low-intensity resistance exercise training can improve the pulmonary function and negative emotions of patients with severe COPD,and play a positive role in improving their motion ability and life quality.
