Study on body image and quality of life in patients with prostate cancer

Objective To investigate quality of life(QOL) of patients with prostate cancer,to comprehend differences in QOL of patients treated with androgen deprivation therapy(ADT) or no therapy,and to explore relationship between body image and QOL among these men.Methods A total of 155 men with prostate cancer were recruited to complete such questionnaires as the Body Image Scale,EORTC QLQ-C30 version 3.0 and EORTC QLQ-PR25.Results The scores of body image and QOL averaged 6.32±4.82 and 60.10±25.67 respectively.Patients receiving ADT scored much lower in domains of cognitive functioning and sexual function than did men who had received no therapy.However,patients receiving ADT,compared with those receiving no therapy,scored statistically higher in nausea/vomiting,and treatment related symptoms(P<0.05,P<0.01).The body image was positively related to symptoms and negatively related to QOL and its functioning domains(P<0.05,P<0.01).Conclusion Quality of life of patients with prostate cancer is not satisfactory,and patients receiving ADT experience poor QOL in cognitive functioning,sexual function,nausea/vomiting,and treatment related symptoms.
