Effects of early psychological and informational supports on preoperative stress in day surgery patients undergoing thyroidectomy

Objective To relieve preoperative anxiety in day surgery patients undergoing thyroidectomy and stabilize their vital signs.Methods Totally,78 day surgery patients receiving thyroidectomy were equally divided into an intervention group and a control group according to the chronological order.Patients in the control group received conventional nursing care and instructions,while their counterparts in the intervention group were additionally given preoperative psychological and informational supports on such four time points as the day of making an appointment for surgery,3 d and 1 d before surgery,and the surgery day.The anxiety levels of patients were evaluated by using the S-AI scale,and pulse rates and blood pressure were measured on the day of making an appointment for surgery and the surgery day.Results The scores of anxiety of patients on the day of making an appointment for surgery were significantly higher than the norm (P<0.05,P<0.01),and anxiety level of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control gropu (P<0.01);the fluctuations of pulse rates and blood pressure in the intervention group were statistically smaller than those in the control group (P<0.01 for all).Conclusion Early psychological and informational supports can effectively reduce preoperative anxiety of day surgery patients undergoing thyroidectomy,stabilize their vital signs.
