The Roles of Cytokines in the Pathogenesis of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an idiopathic depigmentary skin disorder characterized by selective destruction of melanocytes.The etiology of vitiligo is complex and the pathogenesis has not been well underrstood.In recent years many studies show that various cytokines are related with vitiligo pathogenesis.Cytokines can affect the biological characters of melanocytes through autocrine or paracrine modes of action.It has been demonstrated that tumor necrosis factor and interleukin have an inhibitory effeot on the growth of melanocytes,whereas stem cell factor and basic fibroblast growth factor can promote the growth,differentiation and proliferation of melanocytes.Here is to introduce the mechanism of action of various cytokines as well as applications and outlook on vitiligo.
