| Abstract: | Supporting patient self‐management is an important part of the care of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but patients vary in their capacity and willingness to manage their illness and may feel overwhelmed by the challenge of controlling the impact on their life. This paper discusses the value and importance of control theory and how it might be applied to enhance patients' self‐management. Not only does it offer a means of identifying those who might have greatest difficulty in managing their illness, but it also points the way to effective interventions.
