Abstract:Objective To study the changes of motor cortex excitability in patients with Alzheimer disease(AD) and in patients with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia(SIVD) by transcranial magnetic stimulation.Methods Fifty patients with dementia from outpatients were divided into two groups:AD group and SIVD group,each group contained 25 patients.Twenty-five healthy subjects constituted a control group.The two patient groups and the control group were examined by mini-mental state examination(MMSE),clock drawing test(CDT) and activities of daily living scale(ADL),they also underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation.Motor threshold and cortical silent period(CSP) were measured.All of the data were analyzed.Results Compared with the control group,the scores of MMSE,CDT and motor threshold were lower significantly in both AD and SIVD groups(P < 0.05).The ADL score was higher significantly(P < 0.05) and the CSP was shorter in patient groups than in control,but with no statistically significant difference(P> 0.05).Conclusions Motor cortex hyperexcitability is a common finding in different dementing illnesses including subcortical or cortical in origin.
