Abstract: | Statin treatment of men and women age > or = 50 with coronary artery disease (CAD) and hypercholesterolemia reduces the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, coronary events, coronary revascularization, stroke, and intermittent claudication. The target serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level is < 100 mg/dL in older patients with CAD, prior stroke, peripheral arterial disease, or extracranial carotid arterial disease and serum LDL cholesterol > 125 mg/dL despite diet therapy. Statins are also effective in reducing cardiovascular events in older persons with hypercholesterolemia but without cardiovascular disease. Consider using statins in patients age 50 to 80 without cardiovascular disease, serum LDL cholesterol > 130 mg/dL, and serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol < 50 mg/dL. |
