Abstract: | A survey of blood donors conducted at the Red Cross Blood Bank, Melbourne, Victoria in May 1989 identified deficits in the knowledge of some donor groups. As a result a new medical form for potential donors was designed and trialled. While there were few differences in responses to questions relating to interviewing, general health, medication or transfusion therapy, responses to questions regarding the eligibility of AIDS/high risk groups to donate showed several statistically significant differences. Although improvements in donor awareness have been demonstrated in some areas, further action is necessary to ensure that effective donor selection contributes to quality control and safety of transfusion products. |
