Clinical study of antibiotic-loaded calcium sulfate implantation in the treatment of primary knee joint infection

Objective To investigate the clinical effect of antibiotic-loaded calcium sulfate implantation on the basis of arthroscopic debridement in the treatment of primary knee joint infection.Methods Retrospective analysis the clinical data of 95 patients with primary knee joint infection treated by arthroscopic debridement in Department of Orthopedics,First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2017 to June 2020.According to the treatment methods,they were divided into antibiotic-loaded calcium sulfate group(observation group,40 cases)and continuous irrigation group(control group,55 cases).The baseline data,intraoperative condition and postoperative clinical indexes of the two groups were compared.Results There was no significant difference in baseline data,intraoperative blood loss,inflammatory index on the 1st day after operation and Lysholm score at the 3rd month after operation between the two groups(P>0.05).The hospitalization time,hospitalization expenses,inflammatory indexes on the 3rd and 6th days after operation,Lysholm score on the 6th day after operation,complications and recurrence rate of infection in the observation group were better than those in the control group,but the operation time was longer than the control group.The differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion On the basis of arthroscopic debridement,antibiotic-calcium sulfate implantation in the treatment of primary knee joint infection can obviously shorten the hospitalization time of the patients,decrease the postoperative inflammation index quickly,and is beneficial to the recovery of knee joint function as soon as possible.
