| 摘 要： | 国家的作用是政治思想史上的基本问题之一。在这个问题上，西方学者们对著名基督教思想家奥古斯丁的作品作了不同的解读，形成了“国家消极论”与“国家积极论”这两种不同的见解。本文通过对相关重要文本与理论的分析，指出奥古斯丁既强调国家在消极意义上的“惩恶”作用，又重视国家在积极意义上的“扬善”作用。他对国家之作用的认识既未背离古典思想的传统，又与中世纪的基督教政治传统一脉相承。
