Three Cases of Plague in Shawan County: A Clinical Report

A case of sudden death occourred in a mountainous area in the Tianshan Mountains (43? 35' N, 85? 10' E, 2770m above sea level) in August 4, 1988, the dead was a 26-year male herdsman of Kazak nationality. Epidemio logic and bacteriological studies indicated that the man died of plague by skinning a marmota. No subcutaneous lymphadencctasis was found, suggesting that the man was suffering from septemia seconded by pneumonic plague. Another man and a pupil who had close contact with the dead were also infected with plague 3 days later. Thanks to the early diagnosis and intensive treatment, the latter 2 patients were recovered.
