Abstract: | Pregnant women and mothers with infants and young children are increasingly visible in the labor market. Their employment rate currently approaches 50 percent. This historical review examines current policies related to pregnancy and parental leaves and concludes that ambiguity and discontinuity characterize American maternity benefits. |
