Abstract:
The potential of curcumin as a photosensitzer, radical scavenger and iron-chelating agent within an artificial membrane (i.e., liposome) is discussed. Curcumin is found to have a dual effect on liposome stability, manifested as peroxidation of phospholipids in the membrane. Curcumin incorporated in the liposomes acts as a chelating agent of ferric and ferrous ions in the membrane.
