THE CAUSE OF 65 FAILURES IN TYMPANOPLASTY

From 1971 through 1988, tympanoplasty was performed on 260 ears, but later the result Proved to be failure in 65 ears, with a failure rate at 25%. According to Wullstein, the tympanoplasty performed included.Type 1,168 ears; Type II,22 ears; Type III, 60 ears;Type IV, 6 ears and Type V, 4 ears. The causes of failure in the 65 ears are classified into 8 categories.1. dysfunction of the Eustachian tube ( 20 ) , 2. reperforation of the tympanic membrane ( 15 ) , 3. closure of the tympanic membrane perforation without hearing improvement (6), 4. poor take of the graft at the anteroinferior blunt angle (8), 5. otits media (8), 6. graft rejection ( 4 ), 7. facial nerve trauma ( 2 ) , 8. inner ear damage ( 2 ) .
