Application of Flow Volume Loops in Diagnosis of Pulmonary Diseases

Seven flow volume loops in patients with various pulmonary diseases were presen-ted.Case 1 showed a normal picture of flow volume loops.Case 2,a patient withchronic bronchitis,presented a typical and characteristic obstructive configuration.Case 3,a patient with asthma,resulted in a reversible obstructive picture with greatchange before and afrer inhalation of a bronchodilator.Case 4,a long term smoker,had a picture of small airway obstruction.Though his pulmonary functions obtainedwith spirometry were within normal range,his flow volume loop,however,had alre-ady resulted in early small airway obstruction.Case 5,a patient with squamous cellcarcinoma of the trachea,revealed a picturc of fixed large airway obstruction.Case 6,a patient with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis,had a restrictive abnormality withlong narrow picture.The value of flow volume loops in the diagnosis of pulmonarydiseases was explained.
