The perception of facial profile esthetics among different populations:Systematic Review

Objective The principle aim of this study was to assess the difference of the perception of facial profile esthetics in the patients,clinicians and laypersons.Methods The database search was conducted using the subject heading “Facial profile esthetics” from 2002 to 2021.Titles and abstracts of these articles were reviewed to select the studies that compared the perception of facial profile esthetics in the patients,clinicians or laypersons.The inclusion criteria were 1) articles discussed about the facial profile and 2) the evaluators were patients,clinicians (orthodontists or oral surgeons) or laypersons.Articles about other factors were excluded,such as age,culture,region et al.Results and The search identified articles 1787 papers totally,and there were 26 papers included to be analyzed,while 7 articles were excluded.Finally,19 literatures were selected.The overall direction of esthetic opinion is similar in the patients,clinicians and laypersons.Female patients have higher demands on profile,and clinicians can detect more subtle changes.However,the clinicians should remember that the perception of facial profile esthetics is a complex phenomenon when designing treatment that modifies patients’ facial profile.A patients-centered treatment combined with the patient’s psychological state is suggested.More Chinese studies are needed.
