Abstract:Retinal degeneration diseases are a group of severe eye diseases that can lead to blindness. They are characterized by degeneration and apoptosis of photoreceptor cells and still lacking effective therapeutic procedures. Pluripotent stem cells (induced pluripotent stem cells, iPS cells) obtained from somatic cell reprogramming are similar to the embryonic stem cells (embryonic stem cells, ES cells), which have unlimited proliferation, differentiation and memory characteristics. Retinal cells from iPS cells have been used in cell transplantation for the treatment of retinal diseases, for the study of pathogenesis and drug toxicity evaluation in retinal degenerative diseases. This may provide new ideas and novel procedures for the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases in the future.
