CT evaluation of the effect of adenoidectomy on pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis

Objective To explore the relationship between adenoids of different sizes and pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis,and to analyzethe prognosis of chronic sinusitis in children after adenoidectomy.Methods From August 2018 to December 2018,119 children with or without rhinosinusitis underwent adenoidectomy in Department of Otolaryngology of Shandong provincial Hospital were selected.The size of adenoid was assessed by nasal endoscope before adenoidectomy.All patients were divided into three groups according to the area of blocked nostrils:group A(blocked nostrils<70%,n=23),group B(blocked nostrils 70%-90%,n=42),and group C(nasal obstruction>90%,n=54).Condition of chronic rhinosinusitis was assessed by Lund-Mackay score by using computed tomography(CT)scan before and 3 months after the operation.The comparison of the rhinosinusitis was made before and after the operation.Results Lund-Mackay scores of group A,B and C were(3.91±3.44)scores,(4.02±4.07)scores and(7.67±6.46)scores respectively,and there was significant difference between group C and group A and B(P<0.05).The Lund-Mackay score after adenoidectomy was lower than that before operation,and the difference was statistically significant.Conclusion The pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis is related to adenoid hypertrophy,and the size of the adenoid can influence the condition of rhinosinusitis.Adenoidectomy is beneficial for the therapy of rhinosinusitis.
