Abstract: | The in vitro effect of the addition of non-17-hydroxylated and 17-hydroxylated steroids on the production of aldosterone has been studied in the rat. The biosynthesis of deoxycorticosterone, corticosterone, and aldosterone was increased when progesterone or pregnenolone was added to the incubation media, but neither cortisol nor 11-deoxycortisol was produced. The addition of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone or 17α-hydroxypregnenolone to the incubation media resulted in the biosynthesis of cortisol and 11-deoxycortisol by the rat adrenal; concomitantly, a decrease in aldosterone production occurred. However, no decrease in aldosterone production resulted when cortisol and 11-deoxycortisol were added directly to the incubation media. These studies show that neither cortisol nor 11-deoxycortisol inhibits the in vitro biosynthesis of aldosterone and suggest that other mechanisms are involved. |
