Abstract: | Many health promotion approaches afford education about disease preventionand enhancement of one's health status. But strategies for enabling olderpeople with chronic illness to better mobilize their resources for everydayliving still require development. This practical action research studyexplored the experiences of 13 purposefully selected older persons whoparticipated in a health promotion intervention premised on the adulteducation theory of perspective transformation. Findings illuminate healthpromotion through a holistic interactive process in which professional andchronically ill older person together evolved a caring relationship andenhanced conscious awareness of life and health experiences. Fivehealth-promoting strategies were identified: building trust and meaning;connecting; caring; mutual knowing; and mutual creating. Researcherssuggest several important directions to refine professional practiceapproaches and health care delivery systems in order to promote the healthof older persons with chronic conditions. |
