As one of im- portant treatments in modern medicine, blood transfusion services of many hospitals are facing continuous increase o workload, shortage of competent personnel and/or physical space constraint. The Lean and Six Sigma methodologies arc used to identify improvement opportunities and subsequent measures are taken to optimize the layout of the workin（ areas and workflow. As a result, the sample-handling time was reduced by half, resulting in shorter no-value time ant increased efficiency. The project in blood transfusion is a beneficial exploration for efficient hospital operation.
