Abstract:Human T-lymphotropic viruses (HTLV) are causally associated with adult T-cell leukaemia and with a progressive form of lower limb paralysis known as tropical spastic paraparesis. HTLV-1 is endemic in parts of Japan, the Caribbean, West Africa and probably South America, and is associated with disease in these areas. Horizontal transmission is probably most common through sexual intercourse which, it is postulated, must be more efficient from male to female because virus carriage is more prevalent in women in endemic areas. Vertical transmission appears to be principally through breast milk. Poor housing and hygiene may facilitate transmission.
