Tinea superficialis capitis due to Trichophyton soudanense in African immigrants

Summary. Trichophyton soudanense is a common cause of tinea capitis in north-western tropical Africa. In European countries, infection seems to occur nearly exclusively in African immigrants and not in the indigenous population. From 1986 to 1995 we obtained 7908 fungal cultures from patients undergoing treatment at the department of Dermatology in Aachen, Germany. During this period we observed eight cases of tinea capitis by T. soudanense in African immigrants aged 2–11 years. One African immigrant suffered from tinea pedis and one German patient demonstrated tinea corporis attributed to T. soudanense . All cases responded well to local antimycotics in combination with systemic griseofulvin.
Zusammenfassung. Trichophyton soudanense ist als Erreger der Tinea capitis im tropischen Nord-Westafrika weit verbreitet. In Europa wird eine Infektion mit T. soudanense fast ausschließlich bei afrikanischen Einwanderern, aber so gut wie nie in der einheimischen Bevölkerung gesehen. Von 1986 bis 1995 wurden in der Hautklinik der RWTH Aachen insgesamt 7908 Pilzkulturen von ambulanten und poliklinischen Patienten angelegt. Dabei konnte bei 8 afrikanischen Einwanderern mit einer Tinea capitis im Alter von 2 bis 11 Jahren T. soudanense nachgewiesen werden. Bei einer Afrikanerin bestand eine Tinea pedis und bei einer deutschen Patientin konnte T. soudanense aus einer Läsion am Arm angezüchtet werden. Die Dermatophytose sprach in allen Fällen gut auf die Kombination von lokalen Antimykotika und systemischer Griseofulvingabe an.
