The Observation on the Levels of Serum Folic Acid in Puerpera and Newborn in Pairs

Folic acid (Fa) is a necessary coenzyme for syntheses of nucleic acid and nucleoprotein.in cells.When there is a lack of it or disturbance of its metabolism, the syntheses of DNA in cell nucleus would be detected, which influences the development of blood cells in bone marrow and then causes anemia.That the lack of maternal FA may induce infant deformity was reported in references.FA nutrient status in 109 pairs of puerperas and newborns was observed, the level of puerpera FA was lower than that of normal group, with statistically significant difference (P<0.0001).Of 109 puerperas,97 cases(88.99%) had a lower FA level.Of 109 pairs, 89 pairs (81.65%) had a lower FA level.The results showed that FA deficiency in puerpera is rather common, it may be due to the increased de mand of FA during pregnancy.The significant positive relation between the FA levels of puerperas and newborns was showed by polybasic regression analyses.That means that the level of umbilical blood Fa relied upon the levlel of puerpera blood FA.Furthermore our datum showed that though the FA in puerpera is deficient, the FA level in umbilical blood is higher than the that of puerpera blood FA, with statistically significant difference (P<0.001).
