Psychiatrists and psychologists in the family court process

Abstract:The author discusses recent changes to Australian family law which affect the role of psychiatrists and psychologists in Family Court proceedings. He argues in respect of some that they are the product of inadequate consultation with the mental health professions but in respect of others that they have the potential to protect the interests of children more effectively. He reviews recent procedural and administrative initiatives in the Family Court and argues also that they are bearing positive fruit He concludes by outlining ways in which experts can more effectively command the confidence of the Court.
