Abstract:Over the past two decades, airway management guidelines for infants born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) have moved towards a less invasive approach. Previously, infants born through MSAF received immediate intubation and endotracheal suctioning. That airway suctioning intervention was believed to decrease the negative side effects that came secondary to the presence of MSAF. Current guidelines do not recommend any routine suctioning for vigorous or non-vigorous infants born through clear or meconium-stained fluid. This review explores the evidence behind the new recommendations regarding infants born through MSAF and the implications the updated guidelines have on current nursing practice and future research.
