Abstract: | Disseminated histoplasmosis is an increasingly important opportunistic infection in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We report the first case of histoplasmosis as a cause of pleural effusion in a patient with AIDS. Recognition of the typical intracellular yeast on a Wright-Giemsa stained smear of the pleural fluid cells allowed prompt initiation of amphotericin B. |
